Below you will find the 2012 - 2013 calendar of events for our Medical Explorers program.  Meetings will take place the second Thursday of each month (with the exception of February) and will begin promptly at 6 p.m. and will be dismissed at 7p.m. 

Reminder:  If Kanawha County Schools are cancelled or dismissed early due to weather on a scheduled medical explorers date, the meeting will automatically be cancelled.   We will plan to meet at the next regularly scheduled meeting.

What will I learn about in health care?

We have three tiers in our program: intern, resident and fellowship. An intern is a first year participant who will learn about CAMC and its companies as well as hear about more than 100 health career opportunities. You will not only hear about the health careers, but you will also meet many of the professionals who work in these careers here at CAMC.

Participants returning to the post, but not yet in college, are called residents. Our residents are granted additional opportunities such as running for office as president, vice president or liaison.

Students who have graduated from high school and are in their first year of college are our fellowship members. We will stay in constant communication with these members and provide them with information about health careers and the medical industry.

As West Virginia’s premiere medical teaching facility, CAMC prepares a variety of health care professionals to care for West Virginians.  On any given day, CAMC hosts more than 500 students in programs leading to degrees or certifications in health professions.

While the care of patients takes place in hospital buildings with state-of-the-art equipment, it is a large number of hospital staff that provides the care, keep the buildings running and operate the equipment.  CAMC’s well-trained physicians, nurses, allied health professionals and support staff offer thousands of families convenient access to quality health care.

People enter health careers to make a difference in the lives of others.  Students in our Medical Exploring post will meet and talk with many professionals who will talk about their educational and work experiences.  They will also share their personal challenges and rewards relating to their profession.  Students are also provided opportunities to tour our three hospital campuses and other off-site facilities, such as our Sports Medicine Center.

Tesitmony:

Medical Explorers has been a wonderful experience for me. If I could change one thing about my experience, it would be that I had joined the program earlier in my high school career. Medical Explorers has not only given me opportunities to hear fascinating lectures from physicians and hospital staff, it has helped corroborate my desire to enter a career in the medical field. I cannot thank Mrs. Roquet enough for coordinating this great program. It is encouraging to see the passion she has to help students like me explore the medical field. I am always excited to be a part of the next meeting because our meetings are interesting and informative. I have greatly enjoyed our speakers who are always eager to answer questions and educate us about their field. My favorite presentation was given by Dr. Brown.  She shared her training experience in the emergency room setting, as well as some fascinating hands on materials.  Medical Explorers has had a great impact on my life. By seeing inside the medical field, I have developed more of a passion for helping people. It is an experience that will stay with me the rest of my life.

How do I join?

CAMC is proud to partner with the Boy Scouts of America, who sponsor the Exploring program in Kanawha and Putnam counties. CAMC’s Medical Explorers post has been active since 1979, and currently has more than 100 participants. We are proud of our program, which has evolved into a “club-like” atmosphere. Our goal is to provide students who are considering a career in health care or medicine with first hand information from health care professionals within our medical center.

We begin our program in October and meet monthly thereafter up through May.
