Occupational Therapy
| |
|
| Occupational Therapy (OT) is a health and rehabilitation profession. Occupational therapists work with people of all ages who need specialized assistance to lead independent, productive and satisfying lives due to physical, developmental, social or emotional problems. OTs use the "occupations" of self-care, work and play/leisure activities to increase independence, enhance development, and/or prevent disability. To achieve these goals OTs may also adapt the task or the environment. |
| Specialty: |
Occupational therapists assist clients with activities of daily living (ADL) retraining, home-management and return to work function after the onset of a disability. Therapeutic exercises and activities may be used to improve upper extremity function such as increase strength, dexterity and eye-hand coordination for optimum level of independence with self-care tasks. OTs also provide cognitive retraining to improve decision-making, abstract-reasoning, problem solving, memory and sequencing as well as visual-perceptual training – all of which are important for independent living. OTs design activity adaptations through the use of assistive devices and equipment to introduce people to new strategies for carrying out daily activities in a more functional, successful and independent way. |
