CAMC’s Stroke Ctr Earns National Recertification

The CAMC Stroke Center has received a continuation on their national certification status as a Primary Stroke Center from The Joint Commission (TJC), which serves as the gold standard for measuring excellence in national care.

“This certification emphasizes to the public and emergency medical service professionals that CAMC is one of the best-equipped treatment centers for people suffering a stroke,” said Harry Reahl, MD, medical director of the CAMC Stroke Center. “It means that every facet of our stroke program, including prevention, emergency care, inpatient treatment and rehabilitation, measures up to very high standards for health care safety and quality of care set by medical experts.”

"We're proud of this distinction," said Dave Ramsey, CAMC president/CEO. "TJC’s Primary Stroke Center Certification recognizes CAMC’s commitment to providing outstanding stroke care to our patients and community."

CAMC’s interdisciplinary stroke team offers a 24/7 rapid response process for incoming stroke patients. Specially trained in the latest methods of stroke care, the team includes physician specialists in emergency medicine, neurology and radiology, as well as nurses, clinical pharmacists, acute care therapists, case managers and social workers.

TJC’s Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on the recommendations for primary stroke centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association's guidelines for stroke care.

Each year about 700,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke, which is the nation's third leading cause of death. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every 3.1 minutes. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, with about 4.7 million stroke survivors alive today.
