On April 29, surgeons used a robot to assist them with bariatric surgery for the first time at CAMC.

The da Vinci Xi robot is an advanced surgical platform that enhances visualization, precision of movements and ergonomics. Robotic technology represents the latest advancement in surgical techniques designed to improve patient outcomes.

“The CAMC Weight Loss Center offers laparoscopic or robotic assisted vertical sleeve gastrectomy, roux-en Y gastric bypass, duodenal switch and revisional bariatric operations,” said Robert Shin, MD, CAMC Weight Loss Center. “We also offer other advanced laparoscopic or robotic assisted interventions involving the foregut (esophagus, stomach and intestine), hernias (incisional, ventral, inguinal and hiatal) and other general surgical interventions.”

Robotic-assisted surgery is performed laparoscopically, similar to many traditional surgeries. However, the precision of advanced instruments allows for safer, more efficient procedures with less postoperative pain, reduced scarring, quicker recovery and improved overall patient outcomes.

Using the robot to assist with bariatric surgery enables surgeons to operate on patients of any weight or body mass index with consistent results and outcomes.

“It is a great privilege to offer the latest and most advanced surgical tools and technologies to our patients in West Virginia,” said Saad Ajmal, MD, CAMC Weight Loss Center. “I have been practicing robotic-assisted bariatric surgery in Arizona for a few years and saw great results. I was very excited to take on this opportunity and bring robotic-assisted bariatric surgery to our patients in West Virginia.”

Robotic-assisted surgery is available to anyone who is a candidate for bariatric surgery.

The CAMC Weight Loss Center is nationally accredited for adult and adolescent bariatric surgery.

“I anticipate greater accessibility and patient satisfaction from this advanced surgical platform,” Shin said.

The American Society for Bariatric Surgery has designated the CAMC Weight Loss Center as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, recognizing its track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.

The American College of Surgeons Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) has designated the CAMC Weight Loss Center as a MBSAQIP accreditation promoting uniform standards and continuous quality improvement.
