Transfusion services laboratory performs patient testing and supplies blood and blood products to patients requiring transfusions. The department employs a staff of 25 medical lab techs/medical lab scientists and 3 clinical lab assistants covering CAMC General, Memorial and Women and Children’s hospitals. Three pathologists support transfusion services.
The department supports CAMC cancer patients, the Trauma Center, kidney transplants, neonatal intensive care unit, heart and general surgical patients, and other patients.
In addition, transfusion services also supplies blood and plasma to three HealthNet helicopters and participates in outreach programs with other local area hospitals, including in-depth blood bank testing. Additionally, the department trains students from BridgeValley Community & Technical College, Southwest Virginia Community College, Marshall University and West Virginia University.
Transfusion services is inspected and accredited by the Food and Drug Administration, College of American Pathologists, DNV and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
In 2022, the department transfused 11,514 units of red cells, 2,238 platelet pheresis, 2,690 plasma and 2,686 cryoprecipitate.
