Uterine artery embolization for fibroids and bleeding
Amy Deipolyi, MD, PhD, FSIR, one of Charleston Area Medical Center’s Interventional Radiologists, has brought an alternative procedure to women without undergoing major surgery. Uterine artery embolization is a minimally invasive therapy performed through a small catheter placed in the arteries that supply the uterus. This hysterectomy alternative is performed to treat vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain and urinary incontinence due to uterine fibroids and adenomyosis. The optimal patient is over 35 years old and does not wish to have children.
