The CAMC Children's Advocacy Center provides specialized care to children and families in situations involving child neglect and abuse (physical or sexual).
When children come to the center, family advocate Joseph Hall makes sure all children are comfortable. His kind demeanor helps children feel safe and at ease. When they are nervous about labs, he will go the extra mile and tell funny jokes to get them laughing instead of crying.
Recently a child came into the center distraught and reluctant to be interviewed. Hall shared the child's concerns with the interviewer. While in the waiting room, Hall helped the interviewer talk to the child about their concerns. He reiterated the importance of children feeling comfortable and our commitment to autonomy. This allowed the child to feel safe enough to express to the interviewer if they didn't wish to continue talking.
Eventually, the child felt comfortable enough to proceed with the interview.
